Real-World Readiness: Criminal Justice Seniors Master Traffic Stop Procedures

This past week, Mr. Fogt’s Criminal Justice senior students wrapped up a comprehensive unit on traffic stops. Students learned the protocols behind two major types of vehicular encounters: unknown-risk stops and high-risk stops.

Navigating the Unknown: The unit began with standard, "unknown risk" scenarios—the everyday interactions officers experience during routine patrols. Students took turns role-playing as both patrol officers and drivers during simulated traffic stops for infractions like speeding or equipment violations.

Executing High-Risk Protocols: As the curriculum progressed, the intensity increased with high-risk traffic stop simulations. These scenarios involved situations where suspects were known or suspected to be armed.

Under Mr. Fogt’s guidance, seniors had to step into leadership roles to execute high-stress maneuvers, including:

  • Ordering occupants out of the vehicle using clear, decisive verbal commands.

  • Coordinating tactical positioning with backup officers.

  • Safely securing suspects and performing realistic arrest procedures.

Preparing for the Future: For seniors aiming to pursue degrees in criminology, attend police academies, or enter public safety careers post-graduation, these realistic exercises are invaluable. By combining classroom safety theory with hands-on application, Mr. Fogt’s students leave the program with a deep appreciation for the training, discipline, and quick thinking required of modern public safety officers.
